CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) -The City of Cedar Rapids is moving closer to establishing an independent Citizen Review Board.

The city released an ordinance outlining the proposed details today. The goal is to expand on community relations and police accountability.

The proposal is based on months of work with the Advocates for Social Justice and additional community feedback.

The proposed ordinance would create a board of nine voting members appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. At least five members will identify as people of color.

The board will also appoint two police officers to serve as liaisons to the Citizen Review Board.

The board will have several roles including reviewing police data to identify areas of improvement and overseeing complaints lodged against officers.

The full proposal is available on the city’s website. The ordinance will be presented to the City Council for consideration on Tuesday, January 26th.
