WASHINGTON (KCRG) - Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is asking for more investigation into U.S. money that he says went to the lab where COVID-19 may have started.

Grassley says Dr. Fauci’s unit of the National Institutes of Health provided more than $3 million in taxpayer grants to a research organization.

And according to Grassley, that group issued sub-grants of up to $826,000 to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Grassley says that money was spent on researching bat coronaviruses and believes it’s likely the institute was doing “gain of function” research that could have strengthened the virus to the version that caused the global pandemic.

“The People have a right to know what the government knows about the origins of the coronavirus,” Grassley said. “The People have a right to know if Dr. Fauci and other government officials were derelict in their duty to conduct oversight of the money that they knew would end up with the communist Chinese government.”

The National Institutes of Health, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, says it hasn’t funded “gain of function” research on coronaviruses.
