VAN METER, Iowa (KCCI) - The remains of nine unclaimed Iowa veterans and two spouses will soon be laid to rest.

The group consists of Army, Navy and Marine Corps veterans. They will be buried at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Hamilton’s Funeral Home in Des Moines has been planning this service for two years.

The director, Lanae Strovers, said she spent countless hours researching the veterans and trying to find their families.

Some don’t have any living family members, and others were disconnected from their families.

“For me, I just have a hard time having somebody sit on a shelf when I know that we have a beautiful cemetery right here,” Strovers said. “They are going to get the military honors that they are entitled to, and also have their name on a headstone so if down the road if there would be any family looking for them their name is already here, and they would be easy to find.”

The service is on Friday, June 18th.
