CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Friends, family and co-workers are in mourning over the loss of two Cedar Rapids parents.

Prosecutors said 17-year-old Ethan Orton admitted to stabbing his parents on Thursday, then using an axe on his mom when it appeared she was still alive.

Police said they found Misty Scott-Slade and Casey Orton dead near the front door of their home. Both worked at McGrath Auto.

When the crime scene tape is taken down at 361 Carnaby Drive northeast, and police leave the scene, Jay Scherbring will remember his co-workers.

“They were just wonderful people,” Scherbring said.

He worked with Misty Scott-Slade at McGrath.

Scherbring said Scott-Slade was charismatic and even let him stay overnight when he didn’t have a ride home.

“Just an overflow of helping people, just what I really want to take away from this is how willing they were to help people,” he said.

Casey Orton was a technician at McGrath.

In a statement, the company said he had a passion for mentoring young aspiring technicians, and he did it with great patience and mentorship.

“Just she’s going to be really missed,” he said. “She and him (Casey) are going to be really missed.”
