Fire at SW Cedar Rapids hotel leaves one dead

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - One person is dead following an afternoon fire at a hotel in southwest Cedar Rapids.

At approximately 4:20 pm, Cedar Rapids Firefighters were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn, located at 4011 16th Avenue SW, for a report of a fire.
Crews arrived and found heavy smoke coming from a single room.

After extinguishing the fire, responders found a deceased adult male in the burning room. His cause of death and the cause of the fire are both under investigation.

There is substantial damage to the room where the fire started, but crews were able to extinguish the fire and ventilate the area with minimal damage to the rest of the structure. Evacuated guests will be able to re-occupy most of the hotel after the investigation is complete.
